Subtle Glow

my stubborn will, is learning to bend...

But, why?

I admit it, I giggled when I saw this.  I can’t imagine why they would design it that way…

HA! That’s awesome.
Okay. About Portland and your short-list…
What are you looking for, specifically, in a hometown? Ready for my spiel? *deep breath*
Portland is ideally located for the mountains and the beach; has lots of dog parks centrally located, other parks for family fun scattered throughout the city; many scenic roadways in its outlying areas; has lots of trendy little bars and dive bars, too; pretty good shopping fairly spread out around the area (I can think of at least two outlet malls within an hour’s drive); some good funky farmers’ markets and one great Saturday Market that’s like a great big flea market/craft bazaar/artisan’s fair.
Also, the weather, with the exception of yesterday, which was from hell, is just my cup of tea. Nine months out of twelve you will see the sun only sporadically, and the loving embrace of the cool breezes and the cloud cover will protect you from much of Sol’s vengeance. The other three months of the year you will still get a sprinkling of overcast days blended in with the sunny, a nice and refreshing change from the monotony of hot, hot, hot, hot, et cetera.
Downsides: SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) is a possibility if you are from a sun-kissed state like California; high housing prices (I know, compared to CA they’re low, but still - 300K and up for a three-bedroom home? Puh-leeze); still on the West Coast, thus high gas prices; tans that last one week into the winter; humidity out the ass; the high likelihood that you will be asked to sign a petition on every block of Downtown Portland’s central area.
That’s all I got… any good?

Oh, and for culture, we offer just about everything you could hope for in a medium-sized city. The one thing that’s a downer is that Broadway shows and the like are a “wait until the touring production comes to town” type of event.
But we have great (although sadly underfunded) libraries, a good Art Museum (also, on the first Thursday of every month there is a pub-crawl-type event where you can wander down through all the art galleries and such, cleverly called First Thursday), and a growing population of charter and Montessori schools. There is a gifted program in the public school system that my daughter attends. The public schools themselves need a lot of work, a LOT of work, but overall I’d say you could do a lot worse.
Um… what else? A really pretty Waterfront Park along the Willamette River? Three hours away from Seattle?
No Arnold?

Did I mention the Zoo? We have a Zoo… and a great teaching hospital… and a great children’s hospital… and there’s windsurfing in the Gorge… and skiing on Mt. Hood… shut up, Mel! Shut! Up!
